Save Money on Water Bill

Water conservation is a must these days because even if it is abundant, this is something we have to pay for as reflected in the water bill. Just like electricity and gas, this may go up or down on a monthly basis so you should know the different ways to save money for this utility.

The first way to save money will be to check for leaks. You can do this by inspecting the pipes under your kitchen sink or the pipes in your basement. Another test to check for leaks will be to turn off your water and inspect the rest of the house.

Another place that leaks frequently is the bathroom. The best way to check if there is a leak here is to use some food coloring and if the color should spread, it means one of the pipes has a problem and this should either be repaired or replaced.

While you are still in the bathroom, check your toilet . By placing a water bottle in the tank, you get to consume half the volume of water that you used to consume whenever you have to flush it.

Save Money on Transportation

According to the AAA or the American Automobiles Association, the average cost of owning and driving a car 15,000 miles in one year is about $8,211. This could go higher depending on the vehicle you own especially if what you drive is an SUV. If you think about it that is a lot of money so it is only right that you know how to save money on transportation.

Ever car owner knows that gas is just one of the expenses when owning a car. You also have to deal with car insurance, maintenance, registration, financing and a lot more. For people who don’t own a car yet, it will probably be better to buy a used car instead of a new one since its value depreciates even if the vehicle is still in good condition.

When gas went up to more than $100 per barrel last year, a lot of people were feeling the crunch. If you managed to survive and still held on to your SUV, trade it in for a smaller vehicle since this does not consume that much fuel.

Save Money on Food and Basic Goods

All of us need to eat but we don’t have to spend a fortune just to fill up our stomachs. One way to save money is by watching what we eat and this is how you do it.

First, try eating at home more often instead of going out. Sure, we don’t want to cook or are too lazy to do this chore but if you don’t cook, how do you expect to eat? You save more money buying groceries than eating in a restaurant. If you aren’t married yet, this could impress whoever you are dating because they know you can do this on your own.

But don’t deprive yourself from having some fun. You can still go out in a restaurant but instead of ordering the usual, try to get something else in the menu that is slightly more affordable.

Eating in instead of eating out is good so you have to visit the grocery frequently. Before you walk in, make sure you always have a shopping list and never deviate from it. As much as possible, buy everything you need once a week because going to the grocery two to four times a week will tempt you to buy things that were never on the list.

Be Coupon Savvy and Save Money

In a recent episode of Wife Swap, the pseudo wife complained to the husband that he was obsessed with clipping coupons.  As they were grocery shopping, he told her he was stopping for a pizza pie for dinner and that he had coupons.

When he came out of the pizza place, she asked him how much he saved on the pie.  He told her it was $1.00.  Needless to say she lambasted him for buying a pie to save $1.00.  He responded by telling her to take a dollar out of her wallet and throwing it away.

The moral to the story is that regardless of how much you can save using coupons, it is worth every penny.  Some might argue that buying a pizza pie to save a dollar isn’t worth it.  But for this particular family, it was that night’s dinner.

There are a number of websites that offer online coupons - some that you can print for supermarket shopping and others that offer discount to a wide variety of retail stores.

Coupon clipping has become more popular than ever.  With the economy in the tank, every penny saved is well worth scouring newspapers for, checking out online coupon sites, and joining free clubs where you can save quite a bit of money using their discounts.

Ways to Save Money on Utilities

We all want to live comfortably but these days, that comes at a price. It will be challenging since money is a big issue but there are ways to save money even on utilities.

When we think of utilities, we are referring to things like electricity, water, cable and the phone. Will switching or canceling be the only answer? The answer is no because you can’t switch sometimes and there are ways to lower that.

First, conserve energy by making sure appliances and lights are turned off when there is no one in the room. You might think putting the television on sleep mode is good enough but it isn’t so turn off the power switch or better yet, unplug it.

Next, replace your light bulbs with those fluorescent. It does not consume that much power and when you go out shopping for them, make sure that they maintain a Kelvin temperature of 2,600 to 3,000. These may be more expensive than incandescent but they will last ten times longer so it will be quite awhile before you change this with a new one.
